SOCCER - Japan made a statement of their intent as they opened their Asian Cup title defence with a 4-0 rout of tournament debutants Palestine, while a late Yaser Kasim strike put Iraq on course for the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Jordan.

CRICKET - Adelaide and the Sydney Thunder were forced to share the points when rain washed out their their BBL clash at the Adelaide Oval, with the Strikers having posted an imposing 5-119 from their rain-reduced 10 over allotment.
