SOCCER - Real Madrid has scored two late goals to secure a 2-1 home victory over Sporting Lisbon in its first group match of the European Champions League. English champions Leicester City won 3-0 away to Club Brugge, Manchester City crushed Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0, Borussia Dortmund hammered Legia Warsaw 6-0 and Tottenham went down at home 2-1 to Monaco.

PARALYMPICS - Paracyclist Carol Cook claimed Australia's ninth gold medal of the Rio Paralympics with victory in the women's T1-2 road time trial. Teenage sprinter Isis Holt won silver in the women's T35 100m final, upset by China's Xia Zhou by 0.09 seconds.

SURFING - Australian Tyler Wright is closer to her first world championship after winning the World Surf League event at Lower Trestles in California. Compatriot Joel Parkinson lost a nail-biting men's final to South Africa's Jordy Smith.

SOCCER - FC Seoul have reached the Asian Champions League semi-finals with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Shandong Luneng. Qatar's El Jaish booked their place in the last four by beating Al Nasr 1-0 to secure a 4-0 aggregate victory.

TENNIS - World No.8 Gael Monfils has been ruled out of France's Davis Cup semi-final against Croatia in Zadar because of a knee injury. The US Open semi-finalist is replaced by Richard Gasquet.

OLYMPICS - Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko has denied suggestions that the hacking of confidential medical records belonging to leading American sports stars has anything to do with his country.
