TENNIS - Teenage tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios proved his Wimbledon heroics were no fluke as he eliminated two-time semi-finalist Mikhail Youzhny with a 7-5 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-1) in the opening round of the US Open, fellow Aussie Matt Ebden also advancing.

RUGBY LEAGUE - An ominous Melbourne moved up to fifth on the NRL ladder with a 24-10 win over Penrith on Monday night - setting up a tasty clash against premiers Sydney Roosters on Saturday night.

AFL - AFL coaches are calling for the re-introduction of the mid-year draft or trade period, with league chief Gillon McLachlan saying the commission will consider the proposal.
