Jean de Villiers stayed at home to get game time in South African domestic rugby as the Springboks departed for Australia and their southern hemisphere championship opener.
Centre and captain De Villiers returned from seven months out with a serious knee injury to come off the bench for South Africa in a 46-10 victory over a World XV on Saturday.
That boosted his chances of making the World Cup squad. He was released by South Africa on Sunday to be available for his Cape Town-based Western Province team for the next two weeks.
The Springboks chose a 31-man squad to travel for the Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on Saturday but were still missing No.8 Duane Vermeulen, flanker Willem Alberts, centre Frans Steyn and scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, who are all injured.
