Springborg warns of 'accidental' ALP govt

New Liberal National Party leader Lawrence Springborg says his Labor opponents aren't ready to govern because they never really thought they could win.

Newly elected Liberal National Party leader Lawrence Springborg says Queenslanders need experience, not an "accidental" Labor government.

The Newman government health minister was chosen to lead the LNP, with Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek as his deputy, after a three-hour party room ballot on Saturday.

Mr Springborg told the Nine Network on Sunday that Labor didn't seek briefings from major government departments because the party didn't believe it stood a chance.

"I think we're faced with the prospect of an accidental Labor administration," Mr Springborg said.

"They didn't believe they would get there."

The state needed a "steady pair of hands" and the LNP's experience at the helm, he said.

But he conceded the former government did not heed voters' concerns and a new, open style of leadership was needed.

"We understand those concerns. We have to rebuild that trust," he said.

In this respect, he said his party's federal counterparts could also adopt a more transparent and communicative approach.

Mr Springborg, who lost elections as opposition leader in 2004, 2006 and 2009, says the LNP is still in with a chance of forming minority government given four seats are undecided.

With almost 88 per cent of the vote counted, the LNP is predicted to pick up 39 seats, while Labor is tipped to pick up 43 along with the support of independent Peter Wellington.

But Mr Springborg has said he's hopeful he can woo the pivotal independent and will also continue talks with Katter's Australian Party MPs Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth.
