Sri Lankan arrested for 2000 Swiss murder

A Sri Lankan man wanted for the 2000 murder of his partner in the Swiss city of Basel has been arrested in New Zealand.

A Sri Lankan man who arrived in New Zealand using fake documents has been arrested for a murder in Switzerland more than 13 years ago.

The 42-year-old man from central Auckland is wanted in Switzerland over the death of his former partner, 23-year-old Kavitha Kandiah, in the Swiss city of Basel on December 13, 2000.

Police have been working with Swiss authorities since late 2011 on apprehending the man since discovering he lived in Auckland.

The man, a small business operator, will appear in Auckland District Court on Tuesday.

He arrived in New Zealand in February 2001 using false ID and travel documents, and was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2004.

New Zealand has no extradition arrangement with Switzerland, where the arrested man lived from 1990 to late 2000.
