Sri Lankan cricket's new spin

Sri Lanka is expected to be one of the best supported teams at the World Cup and it’s not just their male fans who are snapping up the tickets.

In Sydney’s fast growing Hills district, a women’s team has more than doubled in numbers in their  first grade season.

After starting with a bare minimum 11 players, the North West Hurricanes now boast 23 cricket playing women.

They’re very much a mixed team of Sri Lankans, Indians, Pakistanis, Australians and even some from the UK.

Along with their male counterparts, the Sri Lankan women’s team can’t wait to see their national heroes in action at the SCG on March 8.

They’re expecting Sri Lanka to at least make the semi-finals, and hopefully the March 29 tournament decider.

Fans say a repeat of their 1996 World Cup title would be a fitting send-off for veterans Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene.
