A refugee advocacy group says the immigration minister is perpetuating a myth by saying there's no need for any Sri Lankans to travel to Australia by boat and seek asylum.

Scott Morrison has said the number of Sri Lankans migrating to Australia and becoming Australians has reached record levels and so proves Sri Lankans don't have to use what he calls "illegal" means like a boat to get to Australia and claim asylum.

 

But Ian Rintoul, from the Refugee Action Coalition, has told Murray Silby it's just not that easy for someone who is being persecuted in Sri Lanka to gain entry to Australia by regular means such as the skilled migration program.
