St Kilda have secured young midfielder Jack Steele from Greater Western Sydney.

The Giants will receive a second round draft pick in 2017 for Steele, who played 17 games in his two seasons at the club.

ACT-product Steele was the first Giant drafted through its Canberra academy.

The 20-year-old struggled to cement his spot in the talented Giants side, grappling with injuries including a foot complaint which kept him out of this year's AFL finals.

The Giants have also lost defender Joel Patfull to retirement and Cam McCarthy to Fremantle during the AFL trade period, while youngsters Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett are seeking trades to Carlton.
