St Kilda's Markworth's AFL season in doubt

Untried St Kilda forward Daniel Markworth has suffered a major injury blow which has thrown his 2015 season into doubt.

Luckless St Kilda forward Daniel Markworth is in danger of missing another AFL season after suffering a serious shoulder injury.

Markworth, 22, sustained a minor injury to his right shoulder in the Saints' intra-club match a fortnight ago, but he dislocated the same shoulder in a training mishap yesterday.

Club medical staff are yet to decide on a course of action, but it appears likely Markworth, who is yet to make his AFL debut, will need a reconstruction that will sideline him for approximately six months.

The injury continues a wretched run for Markworth, who the Saints took with the 35th overall pick at the 2011 national draft.

After playing in the VFL in his first year, Markworth missed almost all of the 2013 season after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament at the club's training camp in Colorado.

He underwent a knee reconstruction then had to endure a second operation on the same knee after after developing painful scar tissue.

The young Saint's luckless run continued last year with his season ending in June when he suffered a serious hamstring injury.

"He's had a shocking run," St Kilda assistant coach Aaron Hamill told AFL.com.au.

"You certainly need a bit of luck in this game and unfortunately Dan's been on the wrong side of it for a number of years now.

"He was really starting to show some signs of an AFL footballer so we're really disappointed for him.

"He's waiting to see the surgeon but he can't continually play like that and have it pop out so it's really disappointing for him, and us as a club.

"It certainly puts his 2015 season in jeopardy - there's no doubt about that."
