St Mary's Australian tradition continues

St Mary's, known as Australia's de facto basketball college after recruiting Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, has hired one of Australia's top coaches.

The pipeline of top young Australian basketball talent to California's Saint Mary's College is set to continue with the signing of former Adelaide 36ers and Australian Institute of Sport coach Marty Clarke.

St Mary's, which has bolstered its program by recruiting elite Australians Patrick Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Daniel Kickert in recent years, has announced Clarke would join the college as an assistant coach.

Gaels head coach Randy Bennett said Clarke would be involved in all aspects of the team's program, including recruiting.

"He has extensive experience as a player and as a coach at every international level and will make a major impact in our program," Bennett said.

The Gaels have had so many Australians on their team one of the popular chants echoing through the stadium during home games at Moraga, near San Francisco, is "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi".

The Gaels will boast three Australian players - guard Jordan Page, centre Matt Hodgson and forward Dane Pineau - in the 2013/14 season.

Joining Clarke on the bench will be another Australian, former Wollongong Hawks, Perth Wildcats and Gael player Adam Caporn, who joined the team as an assistant coach in 2010.
