A man stabbed in a random attack on a Melbourne tram says his attacker jammed a screwdriver into his chest, and then smiled.
French national Nathan Barbarat, was also slashed with a knife by his attacker's girlfriend during the incident on a tram at St Kilda earlier this month.
Mr Barbarat, 23, couldn't breathe after the attack because his chest filled with blood.
"After stabbing me, he was smiling," he told reporters on Thursday.
Mr Barbarat said the pair who attacked him had attracted attention because they looked strange, and the woman's face was covered in scratches.
They accused Mr Barbarat of staring at them before they attacked.
"I checked my chest and I see a hole, some blood was coming down," Mr Barbarat said.
The couple fled after that and have yet to be caught.
Mr Barbarat, who works in event construction, said doctors told him he would have died if the hole was inches to the left.
Police have no leads on the "unprovoked, brutal attack" and are appealing to the public to help identify the couple.
They have released images of the man and woman they are seeking.
The man is described as tall, in his late 20s to early 30s with brown shaggy hair with decaying teeth and some top teeth missing.
The woman is described as being in her late 20s to early 30s, with a gaunt, sunken face, dark shoulder length hair, thin build and 160cm tall.
