A man has been stabbed and and petrol bombs were hurled during a brawl south of Sydney.

Rocks and bottles were thrown at police vehicles when they tried to disperse a crowd at Wollongong about 10pm on Saturday.

Police returned about 11.45pm after reports that 100 people were fighting and throwing petrol bombs.

A 19-year-old man suffered a non-life threatening stab wound to his stomach and police were told another man, who could not be located, had been burnt by a petrol bomb.

They've appealed for the man or other witnesses to come forward.
