Stabbings mar Qld NYE celebrations

Police say stabbings, an out-of-control party and a balcony fall marred a largely peaceful New Year's Eve in Queensland.

A balcony fall, stabbings and an out-of-control party in Cairns, along with more than 600 arrests, have marred Queensland's New Year celebrations.

But, overall, celebrations were pretty peaceful and uneventful, police commissioner Ian Stewart said.

There were 636 people arrested overnight, including 172 for liquor offences, but the figure wasn't out of the ordinary.

"That's pretty much in keeping with what we've seen in previous years," he told reporters on Thursday.

"Queensland did celebrate wisely and in most cases very lawfully and peacefully."

But two men, aged 35 and 36, were taken to hospital on the Gold Coast with non-life-threatening stab wounds after getting into a fight around Lakes Circuit at Burleigh Waters.

Another man was badly injured in a stabbing at a dam near Warwick.

A 25-year-old man suffered head and leg injuries in a balcony fall at Varsity Lakes at about 3am.

In Cairns, officers were injured when police were pelted with bottles as they tried to calm an-out-of-control party.

Mr Stewart said one person was arrested.

"Thankfully, we have had no serious injuries to our police across the state during this holiday period," he said.

And the state's biggest celebration, at Brisbane's South Bank, went largely hassle-free with no major incidents, he added.

The South Bank fireworks attracted an estimated 50,000 people, down from the 80,000 organisers had expected.
