Staff and shoppers foil NSW shop hold-up

A knife-wielding trio have been chased from a convenience store in Sydney's west by staff and customers.

Staff and shoppers have foiled an armed robbery at a convenience store in Sydney's west, chasing three would-be thieves from the premises.

The men, two of whom were armed with knives, went into the store in Auburn late on Monday, and demanded cash from the 16-year-old employee behind the counter.

The trio then unsuccessfully tried to grab the register and force it open themselves.

The 51-year-old store owner came to the teenager's rescue, threatening the men with a table held above his head.

Several other staff and customers helped to chase the men from the store empty handed.

Police arrested the trio shortly after, but the group have since been released.
