Stage-diver dies in Switzerland

A 28-year-old man has died after hitting the ground when he dived off a stage at a metal festival concert in Switzerland.

A man who dived off the stage at a heavy metal concert in Switzerland died after the crowd failed to catch him, according to media reports.

The 28-year-old had been at a metal festival last Wednesday in the northern Swiss town of Solothurn when he decided to dive from the stage into the crowd, local daily Solothurner Zeitung reported.

"Unfortunately, the crowd did not catch him properly and he hit the ground," Pipo Kofmehl, head of the Kulturfabrik Kofmehl concert venue told the paper.

At first the accident did not look serious, since the man had gotten to his feet and gone off to wash his hands, but security guards nonetheless took him to hospital, he said.

Police were only alerted to the accident the next day, when the man's condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the capital for specialised treatment.

He died on Friday, according to the report.

Police said they had opened an investigation but considered the man's death a tragic accident.
