Stan Wawrinka falls to Sandgren at Open

Three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka is an Australian Open second-round casualty with a heavy loss to unseeded American Tennys Sandgren.

The ninth seed, who was late to declare his fitness for the grand slam he won in 2014, had no answer to the in-form Sandgren on Thursday night in a 6-2 6-1 6-4 defeat.

Heading into Melbourne Park, the Swiss veteran hadn't played a competitive match in six months after a serious knee injury.

World No.97 Sandgren took advantage of his lack of match fitness, moving the 32-year-old around in the heat of the night.

The injury looked to be restricting Wawrinka's movement, particularly in the third set when the former world No.3 grimaced as he lost his first service game.

Testimony to his lack of form, Wawrinka made 35 unforced errors, spraying forehands all over the court.

Sandgren will play another Open debutant in German rookie, world No.94 Maximilian Marterer.

Despite his first name being perfectly suited to his vocation, the 26-year-old Tennys wasn't named after the sport or his home state of Tennessee but after his Swedish grandfather.
