Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott is in danger of missing the entire AFL season after suffering a setback in his recovery from a back injury.
Elliott, 23, has not played a game this season because of a pars defect injury and he aggravated the problem at training last week.
He will consult with a specialist to consider his options, with Pies' football chief Neil Balme admitting the club can't be certain if he will return this season.
"Jamie's recovery has been spasmodic," Balme said on Tuesday.
"Last week he felt a little uncomfortable with it and next week he will see a specialist with the aim of looking at what, if anything, more can be done to resolve his back issue."
The livewire forward has been sorely missed by the struggling side, coach Nathan Buckley bemoaning a lack of forward pressure as the Pies limped to a 3-5 record to sit in 12th spot on the ladder after eight rounds.
