Starc, Hogg shine with wickets in IPL

Australian bowlers Mitchell Starc and Brad Hogg have shone for their respective Indian Premier League teams.

Mitchell Starc has continued his tremendous Indian Premier League form by taking three wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore, while fellow Australian Brad Hogg picked up two for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Starc took 3-24 from his four overs including a wicket maiden in his first over to dismiss Dwayne Smith, despite Bangalore losing by 24 runs to Chennai Super Kings on Monday.

The left-armer's inswinging yorker that uprooted the stumps would have rattled Smith's Kiwi opening partner Brendon McCullum (20), who was removed by Starc in much the same way on just the third ball of New Zealand's World Cup final loss to Australia.

Starc followed Smith's scalp with those of Dwayne Bravo and Pawan Negi.

It helped Royal Challengers limit Chennai to 9-148, but the Bangalore side couldn't get it done with the bat and were dismissed for 124.

Australian Nic Maddinson struggled to make an impact as opener, the New South Welshman removed for four by Ishwar Pandey in the third over.

Maddinson's opening partner Virat Kohli top scored on 48, but was undone by West Indian allrounder Bravo, who in a brilliant bit of athleticism managed to run out the Indian captain via a direct hit off his own bowling.

The win lifts Chennai to top spot on the IPL ladder.

In Monday's other match, evergreen Australian Hogg shone for the Kolkata Knight Riders as they cruised to a 35-run victory over David Warner's Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The 44-year-old left-armer took two crucial wickets including fellow Australian Moises Henriques, who mistimed a shot and was caught at mid-on.

It followed Hogg's dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan via a less-than-impressive delivery that the Indian left-hander smashed straight to square leg.

Henriques (41) was Hyderabad's standout performer with the bat, while opener Warner only lasted three balls before being bowled by Umesh Yadav for four.

Hogg now has eight wickets from four matches and the second best average (10.87) in the competition behind Starc (9.54), who has 11 wickets.

"Hoggy was exceptional. It was a collective decision to pick three spinners, as we wanted to bat deep," Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir said.
