More than 3000 amateur astronomers are gathering in Canberra in a bid to break the world record for the most people stargazing in one place.

The Guinness World Record bid will take place at the Australian National University on Friday night.

"I want to make it so big, no-one is crazy enough to attempt it again," organiser Brad Tucker, from the ANU's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, told ABC radio.
