The state coroner will hold an investigation into the ferocious Christmas Day blaze which destroyed more than a hundred homes on Victoria's surf coast.

The Coroners Court on Friday confirmed it would be investigating the 2500-hectare fire, which razed 116 homes in Wye River and Separation Creek.

The United Firefighters Union and three property owners made the request on January 18, which the state coroner, Judge Sara Hinchey, has determined is "in the public interest".

The state coroner will wait until the Inspector General for Emergency Management, Tony Pearce, concludes his investigation into the devastating fire before commencing her own.
