State of play in British Open first round

Jason Day is the best of the Australians at six-under, just one shot behind Dustin Johnson after the first round of the British Open.

SCORE OF THE DAY: 65 - Big-hitting American Dustin Johnson leads after the first round for the second major in a row following a blistering start featuring five birdies and an eagle.

STAT OF THE DAY: Little-known Swede David Lingmerth's outward 29 tied Tony Jacklin's first-round front-nine record at St Andrews set way back in 1970.

KEY MOMENT: Jason Day showcasing his short-game touch with scrambling up-and-down pars at the final two holes to finish with momentum in a stylish six-under 66.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I feel good. I'm not thinking about falling over on my face again." - Day insisting he's back to full health following that vertigo attack that cruelled his US Open hopes last month.

STATE OF PLAY: Johnson enjoys the outright lead after his bogey-free round, but Day has raised hopes that an Australian may lift the Claret Jug for the first time since Greg Norman in 1993, while golf's elusive grand slam is still on the cards after reigning Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth fired a 67 to be only two shots back.

AUSSIE WATCH: Jason Day (66), Matt Jones (68), Adam Scott (70), Marc Leishman (70), Greg Chalmers (70), Steven Bowditch (70), Scott Arnold (71), Geoff Ogilvy (71), Brett Rumford (71), John Senden (72), Scott Hend (74), Marcus Fraser (74), Adam Bland (75), Rod Pampling (77), Scott Strange (77).
