States need to get off backsides on gas

Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan says the states need to "get off their backsides" and end bans on new gas developments.

The federal resources minister has taken aim at the states for bans on gas exploration that he says has led to price spikes and the looming shortage.

The federal government last week announced export controls to protect domestic gas supplies, which Matt Canavan says showed the folly of bans and moratoriums.

"Hopefully it's a wake-up call to the states and territories to get off their backsides and develop their own resources," he told Sky News on Sunday.
