'Stay the course,' Hockey urges

Treasurer Joe Hockey has called for Liberal Party members to strengthen their resolve when faced with criticism over his harsh budget.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has called on Liberal Party members to "stay the course" in the face of budget criticism.

Mr Hockey has come under fire for his inaugural budget, considered by some to be the harshest of recent decades.

But the treasurer told the Liberal Party federal council on Saturday that he and the party had "steely determination" to see the changes through to fix the mess left by Labor.

"We will not cower in the face of criticism, we will not be shy about advocating what is right, we will not be afraid to lay down the policies that build a stronger Australia," Mr Hockey told the conference.

"We are builders, we are constructors, we are lifters ...

"When the critics grow fierce and when the words appear intimidating, strengthen your resolve."

Future generations would recognise the good being done, he said.
