Steel and Tactix fight out 58-58 draw

Southern Steel and Mainland Tactix have fought out a 58-58 draw after going goal-for-goal over the closing stages of their trans-Tasman netball clash.

Southern Steel and Mainland Tactix have fought out a 58-58 draw, going goal-for-goal in a thrilling last 10 minutes of their trans-Tasman netball league match in Invercargill.

In a frantic last two minutes on Sunday, neither team could get the decisive break.

The Tactix had a chance from a turnover but Mwai Kumwenda couldn't land an attempt from long range that would have given her side the lead and the centre pass.

The Steel went back in front through goal shoot Jhaniele Fowler-Reid but with two seconds left, the Tactix levelled again when goal attack Bailey Mes slotted from under the post.

While Kumwenda (34 from 37) and Mes (23 from 31) shared the scoring duties for the visitors, the Steel again relied heavily on Fowler-Reid.

The Jamaica international, who last week grabbed the game's last six goals in a 58-57 victory over the Mystics, was the main focus of the Steel feeders and she landed 50 of her 56 attempts.

The Tactix, as in their 70-55 defeat to the defending champion Queensland Firebirds in the opening round when they led for much of the first quarter, had the early advantage.

They were still in front at half-time, by 30-28, before the Steel produced a big third quarter that ended with Fowler-Reid shooting five in a row to give them a 45-41 advantage.

The Tactix went on a four-goal run to draw level 47-47 setting up a nail-biting finish that had the crowd in full voice.
