Stem cells have been injected into the brain of a Parkinson's disease patient at a Melbourne hospital.

Neuroscientists transplanted the cells, which were frozen and flown from the United States, in an eight-hour operation at Royal Melbourne Hospital, News Corp reports.

The cells can change into brain cells and it is hoped they will help combat tremors, rigidity and slowness in the 64-year-old patient.
