Mexico is watching out for the banned steroid clenbuterol - on the dinner plates of its athletes.

National sports commission Conade says the steroid has caused problems for its athletes before. Ranchers in Mexico have been known to feed clenbuterol to livestock to help increase meat yields.

Conade said on Wednesday that coaches were keeping a special watch on meat supplied to athletes ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

Clenbuterol boosts metabolism and burns fat. It is banned for use in livestock in Mexico.

Authorities inspected 200 slaughterhouses in 2015, suspending 58 of them after finding clenbuterol in livestock.
