Two men have been charged with assaulting police after steroids and a large sum of cash were seized in southern Sydney.

Police stopped a car on Frederick Street in Rockdale just before 6pm on Sunday and were about to conduct a search when the driver allegedly locked the vehicle and began to walk away.

Officers attempted to grab him at which point he allegedly became aggressive and ran from the scene.

As this was happening, a 19-year-old man from a nearby house approached the officers, allegedly acting aggressively.

He was arrested and charged with assaulting police and hindering police.

A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed a vial of steroids, syringes and a large sum of cash.

The driver later attended Kogarah police station and was charged with a number of offences, including assaulting police.
