Stingers score big water polo win

The Australian women's water polo team have thumped South Africa in their final group match at the FINA World Cup in Russia

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia, Aug 15 AAP - The Australian women's water polo team crushed South Africa 20-2 in their final group match before facing host nation Russia in the quarter-finals of the FINA World Cup.

Olympic bronze medallists Glencora McGhie and Ash Southern together with Stingers' debutante Morgan Baxter led the charge for Australia, each scoring three goals.

McGhie produced a moment of magic when she launched a nine-metre shot into the back of the cage in the second quarter.

World Championship silver medallist Keesja Gofers was another standout, winning all four swim-offs at the beginning of each quarter and scoring two goals.

Stingers goalkeeper Lilian Hedges praised her side's defence.

"I was a little bit nervous at the start, it's always a bit nerve wracking," Hedges said.

"Our communication was good, we played the way we wanted to play and we didn't slack off in defence and the score shows that."

The Stingers play Russia at 7pm AEST on Friday
