Andrew Stoner has resigned from the NSW ministry just two days after stepping down as NSW deputy premier to spend more time with his family.

The Nationals MP held several portfolios - including trade, investment and tourism.

"After my recent decision to retire at the next election, today I informed Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier Troy Grant that I am resigning my ministerial positions effective immediately," he said.

"After talking with my family, I made this decision in order to allow me to spend more time at home in the immediate future whilst enabling the new Leader of the NSW Nationals to stamp his own personal brand on the party.

Mr Stoner said on Wednesday he had made the decision to exit parliament in March after his wife asked him to bring forward his retirement plans.

"This has coincided with some very difficult family issues that have been faced pretty much by my wife and three children back at home," he said.

"I can no longer expect or ask my wife Cathy to face these issues alone."

Mr Baird says Mr Stoner's old ministerial jobs will be divvied up between Mr Grant, Nationals MP John Barilaro and fellow Nationals MP and Roads Minister Duncan Gay.

They'll be sworn in at Government House later on Friday.
