Stosur jumps Gajdosova hurdle in Japan

Sam Stosur has overcome a fallen Jarmila Gajdosova for the first time in her career to make the quarter-finals of the Japan Women's Open.

Samantha Stosur is continuing her late season charge and has moved into the quarter-finals of the Japan Open with a win over fellow Australian Jarmila Gajdosova.

Stosur the No.1 seed for the tournament won the first set in a tie-break before Gajdosova retired hurt in the second game of the second set to give Stosur her first ever win over her fellow Aussie.

The win takes Stosur to the quarters where she will meet 122nd-ranked Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, who took care of talented Brit Heather Watson in the second round of the event with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Stosur's performance thus far has come on the back of some very good form, having made the semi-finals the week prior in Beijing, where she fell in three sets to Czech Petra Kvitova and helped herself back into the world's top 20.

In other results Lauren Davis ended local hopes when she easily dispatched of Shuko Aoyama 6-1, 6-1. Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas equally impressive in her 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena.

Croatian world number 113 Ana Konjuh pulled off an upset 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over American fifth seed Coco Vandeweghe, wrapping up victory in four minutes short of two hours.

Stosur's biggest obstacle could end up being 19-year-old second seed Madison Keys, who is also through to the quarters, but in their two meetings to date Stosur has beaten her handily both times.
