Stosur surges into Swiss Open second round

Samantha Stosur has brushed aside 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-3 6-2 at the Swiss Open in Gstaad.

Stosur, who fell to the Italian at Roland Garros in her maiden grand slam decider eight years ago, will face local hope Patty Schnyder in the second round.

Schnyder, who has a 2-2 record against Stosur, advanced despite dropping the first set against Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein.

Elsewhere, France's world No.48 Alize Cornet qualified for the second round on Tuesday after defeating world No.190 Silvia Soler Espinosa of Spain 6-2 6-2.

Cornet fired two aces but committed six double faults, compared with her Spanish opponent's zero and two, respectively.

Evgeniya Rodina of Russia beat Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-7 (7-3) 6-4 7-6 (13-11).

The 29-year-old is set to face Mona Barthel of Germany, who on Monday beat Russia's Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-4 3-6 6-2.
