Samantha Stosur has continued her encouraging return from a foot injury with a straight-sets win at the Madrid Open, but fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua lost heavily.
Stosur made quick work of Estonia's Kaia Kanepi on Monday, sending down seven aces on her way to seeing the world No.53 off 6-3 6-2 and advance to the third round of a tournament for the first time this year.
The 2011 US Open champion had returned to the court on Sunday for the first time since the Charleston WTA event at the start of April, securing a three-set victory over in-form German world No.11 Angelique Kerber.
Stosur's second win in as many days provides a much-needed morale boost ahead of the French Open later this month, and sets the former Roland Garros finalist up for a third-round meeting in Madrid with another former US Open champion, Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Kuznetsova progressed after defeating home favourite Garbine Muguruza 6-3 5-7 7-5 in more than two and a half hours on court.
It wasn't such a fruitful day for Dellacqua, who went down to Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-1.
Dellacqua won only 43 per cent of points off her first serve and 54 per cent off her second against an unforgiving Radwanska.
The 30-year-old also failed to convert on all six of her break-point chances.
Radwanska will face Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, who beat American qualifier Christina McHale 7-5 6-0.
Croatian-born Australian Ajla Tomljanovic will have a formidable task on her hands on Tuesday, needing to win against Belarussian Victoria Azarenka in order to move past the second round.
If she succeeds, she'll then face world No.1 Serena Williams in the last 16.
Williams enjoyed a routine 6-4 6-0 win over US compatriot Sloane Stephens in under an hour on Monday, the 19-time Grand Slam champion extending her unbeaten record this season to 22 matches.
