Stosur's Mallorca run cut short in semi

Samantha Stosur dropped a first-set tiebreak before being swept aside by defending champion Anastasija Sevastova in the semi-finals of the WTA's Mallorca Open.

Samantha Stosur will head to Wimbledon with some positive thoughts after her run to the semi-finals of the Spanish grass court WTA tournament in Mallorca.

After three solid wins, the Australian veteran faced third-seeded Anastasija Sevastova and it was the Latvian that prevailed 7-6 (7-1) 6-1.

The win propelled the defending champion into her third successive final at the event.

A day after eliminating Stosur's compatriot and qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic in the last eight, Sevastova proved too consistent.

"It was a tough draw here with a lot of good players," Sevastova said.

Standing between Sevastova and her second consecutive Mallorca Open trophy is Tatjana Maria, who defeated qualifier Sofia Kenin 6-2 2-6 6-4 in the day's early smi-final.
