Stoyle impresses on world surfing debut

Diminutive Sunshine Coast surfer Dimity Stoyle has stolen the show on her world championship debut in the season-opening event on the Gold Coast.

Australian rookie Dimity Stoyle stole the show at Snapper Rocks on Saturday with an impressive debut as a full-time world championship surfer.

The diminutive Sunshine Coast surfer made the most of unspectacular conditions on the Gold Coast to post a score of 17.13 out of 20 in her opening-round heat.

That score was the biggest two-wave total in the first round and easily enough to advance the diminutive 22-year-old into the third round of the season-opening Roxy Pro.

Her 9.13 was also the highest single-wave score of the day, eclipsing defending world champion Carissa Moore's 9.0 in an earlier heat.

"Man, I can't have started this year better," Stoyle told AAP.

"I'm so happy with that. I was pretty nervous going into my first world tour event and I was just so happy that I got two high-scoring waves and took out that heat.

"It's a good start."

Stoyle's strong performance ensures she'll pick up a minimum of 3300 ranking points as well as at least $10,500 in prize money.

And while more-fancied Australian hopes such as Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons battle it out in the sudden-death second-round, Stoyle can sit back and relax before her third-round heat.

"It's definitely a bonus having to skip that round two," Stoyle said.

"I'll definitely watch the heats and watch the other girls because they're surfing so amazing. It'll be fun to watch."
