Authorities hope they've saved a humpback whale that had been stranded on a Gold Coast beach.

The whale is now headed out to sea after experts got it back into deeper water on this morning's high tide.

Previous attempts to help the mammal, after it became stranded on Palm Beach on Tuesday, failed.

Experts will continue to monitor the whale's movements.

A resident alerted authorities about the whale about 7pm on Tuesday night, after spotting it near the Palm Beach shoreline.

Sea World staff were involved in the rescue effort.

Earlier, as the tide came in, the whale attempted to swim out to sea.
