Streamlined curriculum ready in 2016

Education ministers have agreed to let the curriculum authority rebalance and streamline what Australian students are taught.

School students will be taught under a simplified and streamlined curriculum from 2016.

The states and territories have signed off on changes that federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne says will provide students with a more in-depth experience rather than the existing broad-brush approach.

For instance, history, geography, civics and citizenship, and economics and business will be combined into a single social sciences subject for primary school students.

There will also be a focus on phonics and phonemics for teaching reading and writing.

It's unsure whether subjects will focus more on Western civilisation and less on indigenous history and Asian studies, as recommended in a review of the curriculum.

The new curriculum should be available by August and in the hands of teachers in time for the start of the new school year.
