Jake Stringer is not guaranteed to be at the Western Bulldogs next year, according to his AFL teammate Mitch Wallis.
Forward Stringer is contracted to the end of 2018 but injuries and form woes this year have him weighing up his future.
His 24 goals from 16 games in the Bulldogs' failed premiership defence was his lowest output since his 2013 debut season - far down from his career-best 56 majors two years ago.
The Bulldogs are being urged to consider trading the 23-year-old and Wallis has suggested Stringer may be willing amid rumours he is unhappy at the club.
"He's working through it," midfielder Wallis told SEN radio on Thursday.
"He wants to stay a Bulldog ... but it's still up in the air and he still has to really commit to the club.
"They want a full commitment from him and not one where he's unsure."
Wallis said teammates wanted Stringer to stay, given he led the club's goal-kicking this year despite being in and out of the side.
He said Stringer would make a decision on his future ahead of trade week next month.
"If he decides to stay, he'll stay for a long time. If he doesn't, good luck to him," Wallis said.
"He's still contracted. I know that doesn't mean too much these days.
"But I'm sure over the next few weeks, he'll have a fair bit of thinking time over what he wants to do."
