Almost 120 aftershocks have been recorded across the Wellington region since a magnitude 6.5 earthquake rattled the capital on Sunday afternoon.
Streams of earthquake notifications have registered with GeoNet, from as low as magnitude 2.9 up to 4.9, with as many as three being felt within a 10-minute period.
The quakes, dubbed the Seddon sequence by GeoNet, are all believed to follow from the first earthquake, a shallow magnitude 5.7 shake that hit on Friday.
Another magnitude 5.8 quake, centred in Cook Strait, hit just after 7am on Sunday, jolting many Wellingtonians awake.
No one has been seriously injured in the series and there is no tsunami risk, but the quakes are expected to disrupt life in the capital during the early part of the week.

Several major organisations have closed their doors while quake checks are carried out and city workers have been advised not to enter the CBD until after midday on Monday.
