Strong Indonesian military 'no threat to Australia'

A new research paper argues Indonesia's efforts to upgrade its military capabilities can benefit Australia.

A new research paper argues Indonesia's efforts to upgrade its military capabilities can benefit Australia.

The report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute says military modernisation in Indonesia could inadvertently safeguard Australia's nothern approaches.

The report's author, Ben Schreer, says Indonesia's access to anti-ship ballistic missiles and maritime domain awareness will better position it to engage a hostile force operating in the region.

Mr Schreer told Darren Mara a modern Indonesian military wouldn't pose a threat to Australia.
