Strong quake kills at least 150 in China

At least 150 people have been killed after a strong earthquake rattled China's south-western province of Yunan.

At least 150 people have been killed after a strong earthquake rattled China's south-western province of Yunan, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The US Geological Survey said the 6.1-magnitude quake struck at 0830 GMT (1830 AEST) on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometres. The China Earthquake Networks Centre said it was a 6.5 magnitude quake.

"I felt a strong jolt in my fifth-floor home and some small objects fell off the shelves," a resident in Ludian told Xinhua.

Another resident, Ma Liya, said the streets were like "a battlefield after bombardment ... The aftermath is much much worse than what happened after the quake two years ago ... What I can see are all ruins," she said.

In September 2012, a 5.7-magnitude quake killed more than 80 people and injured 800.

The county of Ludian has a population of 265,900. Old buildings and homes developed cracks or crumbled, according to Xinhua. Power lines were cut and telecommunications services were affected.

According to Xinhua, a 7.1-magnitude quake hit the same area in 1974, killing more than 1,400 people.
