Strong start for market's new players

On a busy day for new companies on the share market, the majority have enjoyed strong gains in value.

A software developer, diseases screener and mobile marketer have enjoyed strong share market debuts, while investors also welcomed a New Zealand diary giant to Australia.

The a2 Milk Company and smaller companies Touchcorp, Genetic Signatures and OtherLevels joined the market on Tuesday, the last day of the March quarter.

It was a good day to begin trading, with the market up as much as 1.5 per cent during the session, which explained a lot of the strong performances, IG market strategist Evan Lucas said.

"That's the issue with a small cap player ... they trade fairly erratically on their open," he said.

Biotech firm Genetic Signatures, a developer of technology that enables hospitals and pathology labs to rapidly screen for infectious diseases, gained 21.3 per cent in market value.

Shares in OtherLevels, an analytics and marketing firm, added 17.5 per cent, while Touchcorp, which provides an electronic payments system to 7-Eleven, Telstra and Optus, gained 10.7 per cent.

The a2 Milk Company also began trading on the Australian market, as it opens itself to greater sources of capital in line with its international growth.

Its products have been available in Australia for seven years, and it decided to have its shares trading here to align with its operations.

The Australian listing coincides with the launch of a2 Milk in the United States.

a2 Milk shares began trading at 55.5 cents and at the close of trade had gained one cent.

Mr Lucas said a2's move was unusual but logical, considering the company would now have access to more investors in the country where it derives most of its earnings.

"The New Zealand market is limited by its scope and reach whereas the ASX is a bigger market," he said.

There's even more new opportunities ahead for investors, with accounting and software company MYOB unveiling details of its $800 million IPO on Tuesday afternoon.
