Strycova advances in Swedish Open

Klara Koukalova advanced to the Swedish Open quarter-finals after Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament with an elbow injury.

Third-seeded Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic has secured a place in the Swedish Open quarter-finals by beating Russia's Evgeniya Rodina 6-4 6-1.

Strycova next faces Swedish seventh-seed Johanna Larsson, who beat Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-3 7-5.

In other second-round games at Bastad on Thursday, Rebecca Peterson claimed her second WTA win with a surprise victory over sixth-seeded Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.

She will meet the defending champion and No.4 seed Mona Barthel on Friday.

Klara Koukalova advanced to the quarter-finals by a walkover after top-ranked Serena Williams withdrew ahead of their second-round meeting, citing a right elbow injury during practice on Thursday morning.

Koukalova meets Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva, who beat Alize Lim of France 6-0 1-6 6-2.
