An aviation student from a Melbourne university has died in a light plane crash in regional Victoria.
The single-engine Cessna aircraft crashed into a hill at Millbrook, near Ballarat in western Victoria, about 3.30pm on Tuesday, police said.
The victim, the plane's sole occupant, hasn't been formally identified.
But RMIT University vice-chancellor Martin Bean has confirmed the victim was an aviation student at the university and was on a solo training flight from RMIT's Point Cook aviation training site when the crash occurred.
"The RMIT community is devastated by the news that one of our students has died while on a solo training flight," he said in a statement.
"On behalf of the university, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to the student's family, loved ones and friends.
"I am at RMIT's Point Cook flight training centre to be with students and staff."
He says RMIT will assist the Air Transport Safety Bureau, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and police, and is offering counselling to all aviation students and staff.
