Stylist's faux pas at Depp's engagement do

Johnny Wujek, best known as Katy Perry's stylist, says he accidentally wore mismatched shoes to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's engagement dinner.

He may be one of the world's top celebrity stylists, but Johnny Wujek confesses he'd had the odd wardrobe malfunction.

At Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's engagement dinner, no less.

Wujek, best known for being Katy Perry's long-time stylist, inadvertently wore mismatched shoes when he rocked up to the star couple's Los Angeles celebration in March.

"I was running late and the light was off in my closet," he tells AAP.

"I was doing one of those, `which shoe looks better' things, asking my boyfriend.

"But I wasn't paying attention because I couldn't find my wallet, so I ran out the door."

It wasn't until he got out of the car at the venue that he realised something wasn't quite right.

"I looked down and I was wearing one boot with a heel and one flat shoe - two completely different shoes," says Wujek, who's in Australia as a brand ambassador for Colgate.

"One was a green leather boot, one was a blue lace-up loafer. People were like, `Did you intentionally do that?' and I was like, `Well, no, but kind of'. I went with the flow and was like, `Yes, I planned this'.

"Amber and Johnny were cracking up, they thought it was hilarious."

Heard, one of Wujek's closest friends, is one of the former model's clients. So are Kate Mara, Rachel Bilson, Zac Efron and Nicki Minaj.

He also transformed Kim Kardashian's style from party girl to sleek after she got together with hip-hop artist Kanye West.

But Wujek's own career took off in tandem with Perry's after the singer hit on him at a 2006 Beverly Hills house party thrown by Australian fashion label Sass and Bide.

"She was trying to figure out which team I was on - hers or this really cute guy friend she was with," he says.

"I was like, `I'm on his team'. I ended up dating him for a couple of months but we all became friends."

It marked the start of a long friendship with Perry, with Wujek saying "she brought me along" as her fame snowballed and fought for him to dress her for her first album cover and music video.

Wujek has been pulling the strings of the singer's playful and provocative image since her I Kissed A Girl days. He masterminded her LED-lit dress, cupcake bras and whipped cream bikini for the Candy Land-themed California Gurls video.

He says nothing is ever too outrageous for the chart-topper.

"Music is such a fun place to play and be adventurous, and make these outrageous costumes," he says.

"On stage we're lighting up and spinning around and exploding.

"Movie stars always love to look glamorous, they always want to be on the best-dressed list. But Katy's down to have fun and take a chance and be on the worst-dressed list. That's something she believes in."
