Subsidy boost for wheelchair taxis in NSW

Increased government incentives for wheelchair accessible taxis and passengers have been welcomed by the NSW Taxi Council.

The NSW Taxi Council has welcomed the state government's $15.5 million payment boost for drivers of wheelchair accessible taxis and customers.

Subsidies will double from July 1, with a $60 cap per trip for customers and $15 per trip for drivers of wheelchair accessible taxis who pick up wheelchair users, Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced on Sunday.

"These new measures will assist people with special needs to access reliable and sustainable taxi transport options provided by professional drivers who are required to undergo specific training," NSW Taxi Council CEO Roy Wakelin-King said on Tuesday.
