Summers wins Qld PGA at 45

Anthony Summers has broken through to win his first pro tour title at age 45 in the Queensland PGA Championship.

It was 23 years coming, but Anthony Summers' first tour golf victory was sweet indeed.

The 45-year-old New South Welshman shot a closing seven-under-par 63 to win the Queensland PGA Championship by three shots from New Zealander Grant Fox (67), the 25-year-old son of All Blacks great Grant Fox.

Summers, who first joined the Australasian PGA Tour back in 1991, finished at 24-under-par 256 at the City Golf Club Toowoomba as he claimed his maiden title on Sunday.

He sealed the win with a miraculous eagle on the par-5 16th from out of the trees after hitting his worst tee shot of the week.

"I'm ecstatic, relieved, elated, I'm just feeling a whole mix of emotions at the moment," said Summers after going head to head with Fox in the final round.

"I've had a lot of chances to win in the past so to have a three-shot buffer on the last was fantastic.

"I was still as nervous as a kitten on the 18th hole, my heart was beating a million miles a minute."

He praised Fox's potential.

"Ryan's length is prodigious. If he hits it straight there won't be too many who can compete with him," said Summers.

The win came despite back problems which threatened to ruin his day.

"I have a long history of back issues and it felt very close to going this morning," said Summers.

"I was very concerned, I didn't go to the range at all this morning, I spent a lot of time with the physio."

Victorian David Bransdon made a Sunday charge, shooting a 62 to finish outright third on 19-under.
