Suncorp chairman Ziggy Switkowski has told shareholders his new duties running the National Broadband Network won't see him leave the Queensland banking and insurance company.

Addressing Suncorp's annual general meeting in Brisbane, Dr Switkowski promised to review his other corporate commitments - three weeks after Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull appointed him as executive chairman of the new NBN Co board.

"In taking on this new post, I recognise that for an interim period this will involve executive responsibilities and inevitably some new challenges and workload," he said on Thursday.

"I want to assure you I have the enthusiasm and capacity to carry out my duties for the Suncorp Group while taking on the demands of the National Broadband Network."

Since taking on his new NBN Co role, Dr Switkowski has taken a leave of absence from the Oil Search board.

He had earlier resigned as Opera Australia chairman and from the board of rare earths miner Lynas Corporation, but remains chancellor of RMIT University in Melbourne and a non-executive director of TAB Holdings.

"I will continue to reassess all of my other commitments to ensure both of these important assignments can co-exist without compromise during this interim period," Dr Switkowski said.

The nuclear physicist joined the Suncorp board in 2005, a year after controversially leaving Telstra with a $2.1 million payout after being dumped by the board.

In his second year as Suncorp chairman, he said he remained "committed to the interests of the Suncorp Group and its shareholders".

Suncorp shares closed six cents higher at $13.14.
