Suns ban trio from AFL

Gold Coast have dropped star trio Harley Bennell, Trent McKenzie and Brandon Matera for breaking a players' booze ban at the AFL club.

It is understood players were asked to stay off alcohol following Saturday's win over Brisbane, their first of the season.

Several players cramped during the game and the fitness staff wanted an emphasis on recovery.

But the trio broke the team rule on Sunday and the Suns' leadership group raised it the following day.

They will miss Saturday's home game against Adelaide.

It is a major decision by the Suns under new coach Rodney Eade as they struggle with a long injury list and poor early-season form.

Given the injuries to Jarrod Garlett, Seb Tape and Jack Martin and Steven May's potential suspension, Gold Coast now could have to make seven changes this week.

There was widespread expectation that Gold Coast would push for the finals this season, but their absentees include captain Gary Ablett and young star Jaegar O'Meara.

Eade admits the club bans will put a big hole in their team for the clash against the Crows.

"We had clear expectations and we are extremely disappointed and frustrated that Harley, Brandon and Trent didn't meet these standards," Eade told the club website.

"We have been encouraged that the majority of the playing group have made progress in living the attitudes and behaviours required to be an elite AFL player and team.

"However those who don't live by the team's standards will be made accountable, no matter who they are.

"The actions of Harley, Brandon and Trent will leave us incredibly bare on the field this week, but this tough decision reflects the direction our club is heading and we can't compromise that."

Acting captain Michael Rischetelli said the players fully backed the punishments.

The trio will play in the second-tier NEAFL competition this weekend.

In February, Bennell was among four Suns players who were punished for drinking in another breach of team rules.

News of this week's bans did not impress everyone.

"Can't have a bet. Can't have a beer. Thank Christ I don't play footy anymore," retired Gold Coast and Hawthorn player Campbell Brown said on Twitter.
