Suns count cost of injuries in AFL loss

Gold Coast Suns suffered their heaviest loss of the AFL season on Saturday night and it was further soured by several injuries to important players.

The Gold Coast Suns' AFL season does not look like turning around quickly after their worst loss of the season, with co-captain Steven May one of three players set to endure a stay on the sidelines.

A humbling 85-point defeat to Geelong in their first 2018 game at Commonwealth Games venue Metricon Stadium had coach Stuart Dew fuming and his mood wasn't improved by the injuries suffered on Saturday night.

The Suns' other skipper Tom Lynch looked far from his dominant self in his return to action against the Cats, after time out with a knee injury, and now the club's other on-field leader and book-end, May, is likely to miss a number of games after leaving the field in the closing stages.

"May stepped on someone, it's a bit of a high ankle or lower leg issue," Dew said.

"When I heard 'high ankle' I wasn't happy with that."

Off-season import from Port Adelaide, forward Aaron Young, also injured his ankle, leaving the field in the third quarter.

"He was unable to come back on couldn't change direction on the medial side," Dew said.

"It doesn't look great but we'll have to see how they pull up."

The first player to go off for the Suns was Aaron Hall in the second quarter and his coach is also resigned to not having the midfielder available for the foreseeable future.

"Hally is either a pec or bicep tendon which isn't great news," Dew added.
